The Mrtvé jezero (German: Dead Lake ) is a landfill basin ( odkaliště ) near Trutnov in the Czech Republic . It serves as a settling basin for the power station ash from the Poříčí II power station.

location

The Mrtvé jezero is located five kilometers northeast of the city center of Trutnov on Debrnský potok ( Döbler water ). It extends between the Špitálský les ( Spitalwald ) and the Městský les ( Bürgerwald ) on the border between the districts and Debrné Poříčí u Trutnova.

history

The Poříčí coal-fired power station was built in the 1950s. Because of the location of the power station in the Úpa valley surrounded by mountains , the usual disposal of the power station ash by cable car to an ash dump was impractical. The only possible dump site was the plateau southwest of the power plant on Poříčský hřbet (edge of the kitchen ), which, however, did not offer long-term storage capacity. Instead, it was decided to backfill the lower Döbler valley by means of a pipeline.

In the 1960s, the sparsely populated village of Debrné , which was only sparsely populated after the Sudeten Germans had been expelled, was partially dissolved and the lower part of Debrné was flooded with the landfill. After the lower section of the valley had been backfilled in the north, new dams were gradually built and a new utility road to the sedimentation basin was laid on the slope above the flooded old road from Poříčí to Debrné. In the mid-1980s, the backwater of the sedimentation basin also reached the road to Voletiny; with that the desettled Döbler valley lost its last road connection. The lower part of the valley has already been filled. The operator is the ČEZ .
