Mu-Tao Wang

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mu-Tao Wang is a Chinese mathematician from Taiwan who studies differential geometry and geometric analysis with applications in general relativity .

Wang studied international business and then mathematics at National Taiwan University with a bachelor's degree in 1988 and a master's degree in 1992. He received his doctorate from Harvard University in 1998 with Shing-Tung Yau ( Generalized harmonic maps and representations of discrete groups ). After that he was Szego Assistant Professor at Stanford University . In 2001 he became an assistant professor at Columbia University , where he received a full professorship in 2009.

In 2011/12 he was visiting professor at National Taiwan University.

With Yau he developed a new concept of quasi-local masses in general relativity. In differential geometry, he investigated mean curvature flow in higher dimensions.

In 2003 he was a Sloan Fellow. In 2007 he received the Chern Prize and in 2010 the Morningside Gold Medal . He has been a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society since 2012 . In 2014/15 he was Simons Fellow and in 2007 Kavli Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences. In 2010 he was plenary speaker at the ICCM (Quasilocal mass from a mathematical perspective) and in 2012 at the International Congress on Mathematical Physics .
