Lakes

The lakes border directly on Milngavie and are only separated from each other by a narrow dam. At maximum filling, the Mugdock Reservoir has a surface of approximately 0.25 km 2 , the Craigmaddie Reservoir of 0.36 km 2 . They can absorb around 5,637,000 m 3 of water, of which 2,455,000 m 3 are in the Mugdock and 3,182,000 m 3 . The lakes are a maximum of 15 and 13 m deep. In addition to Loch Katrine , the two reservoirs are part of a system of water reservoirs to supply the city of Glasgow .

Building

Construction of the Mugdock Reservoir began in 1855. The English engineer John Frederick Bateman is responsible for the planning . The boundary walls are made of clay with quarry stone. After the work was completed in 1859, the lake fed by Loch Katrine delivered water to the pipeline to Glasgow for the first time via a lock system.

The need for another reservoir was first expressed in 1880. After preparatory work had been carried out in the area, construction of the Craigmaddie Reservoir began in 1886. The work turned out to be significantly more difficult than expected, which is why the executing company abandoned the construction. Only the third construction company was able to complete the reservoir in 1896. The total cost was £ 337,000.
