history

The Mugunghwa Order was launched on August 13, 1949 and was awarded to President Rhee Syng-man two days later .

Usually, the Mugunghwa Order is bestowed on the new President of South Korea shortly after the inauguration. The president whose term of office ends awards the medal to the newly elected president. However, Roh Moo-hyun wanted to change this and only accept the order at the end of his term of office. He said it didn't make sense to hand over the award right after the election. Also, Lee Myung-bak accepted the award until the end of his term counter and reasoned with the difficult economic situation during his presidency, in it a ceremony inappropriate occurred. Park Geun-hye and Moon Jae-in, however, received the medal again when they were inaugurated.

The first foreign head of state to be awarded the medal was West German President Heinrich Lübke , together with his wife, Wilhelmine Lübke .
