Muhammad al-Kabanji

Muhammad al-Kabanji ( Arabic محمد الكبنجي, DMG Muḥammad al-Kabanǧī ) with full name Muhammad Abdul Razzaq Abdul Fattah al-Kabanji , in French transcription Mohammed Elqabbandji , in English Mohammed Al-Gubbenchi , (* 1901 in Baghdad ; † 1989 ), was an Iraqi singer.

Life

Under the guidance of Qaddori Al Isha, Sayyid Weli Hussein, UsTa Mahmoud Al-Khayyat and his father Abdul Razzaq, al-Kabanji learned to sing the maqam , in Iraq he was later considered one of the best singers of his time and a innovator of the form of the maqam . In 1925 he made his first recordings, in 1928 he traveled to Berlin for further recordings. He was the head of the Iraqi delegation at the first conference for Arabic music in Cairo in 1932, where he was awarded the title "Best Arabic Singer". His lecture there was recorded and re-released on two CDs in 1991 and 1994 respectively. al-Kabanji was among other things the teacher of Yousif Omar . In 2003 one of his pieces was used on the soundtrack of the Amnesty International documentary Healing the past, forging the future .
