Muisne is an approximately 8 km² island in the Pacific Ocean, 82 kilometers southwest of Esmeraldas , on Ecuador's northwest coast.

geography

The island is separated from the mainland by a 300 m wide, "río" (= river) called estuary. It is 7.5 km long in the north-south extension and almost 1.5 km wide in the west-east direction at the widest point.

With the opposite coastal strip of the mainland, the island of Muisne forms the Parroquia Muisne. (A parroquia , literally: parish, is the smallest administrative unit in Ecuador.) In addition, Muisne is the eponymous capital of the canton of Muisne.

population

The island had about 6,000 inhabitants in 2010. Another 3,000 inhabitants live on the mainland part of the Parroquia Muisne.

The majority of the population of Muisnes, as in the province of Esmeraldas as a whole, are Afro-Ecuadorians. Their ancestors had been deported from Africa to the Pacific coast in the era of the slave trade .

economy

The main source of income for the islanders is agriculture, followed by tourism and third by fishing.

traffic

To get to the island, several lanchas (motor boats) cross the narrow waterway that separates the mainland from the island of Muisne. Triciclos are used as a means of transport on the island, motorcycle taxis with a third wheel that can be used to transport people and loads for just a few US cents within the village or from the village to the beach two kilometers away. There are no cars on the mangrove island.

You can get to the state capital Quito in around 8–9 hours using the intercity buses that run several times a day.
