Mukhwas

Mukhwas is a colorful Indian or Pakistani sweet and digestive aid. Above all, its ingredients give it a fresh breath. There are various mixtures, some consist of herbs, seeds and grains such as fennel , aniseed or sesame, others also contain nuts (e.g. pieces of coconut or betel nut ). These ingredients are either offered directly or coated with a sugar coating. In addition, colors and aromas / essential oils peppermint , eucalyptus or rose oil are used. After thoroughly chewing mukhwas, it is recommended to drink water in order to intensify the taste and to free the mouth from the chips of the herbs / grains. In the case of the varieties with additional aromas, the full effect / taste only unfolds then. Occasionally, Mukhwas is taken specifically as a medicine, as the ingredients are said to have a positive effect on digestion. The name Mukhwas is a combination of the words “Mukh” meaning mouth and “Vas”, which stands for smell.
