from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mulio ( Latin " muleteer "; plural: muliones ) was a rank in the Roman legion .

task

The Mulio's job was to see to it that a tentorium was built . This was a tent in which eight legionaries (a contubernium ) slept and which was used for marching soldiers. This tent was transported with a mule (mulus) , which the mule also had to feed and care for.

Training and equipment

As muliones, mostly young men in the provinces, not infrequently the illegitimate sons of the soldiers, were recruited. They had no armament and wore a simple tunic . They also had a leather bag in which they carried tools for setting up the tent.

The Muliones did not take an active part in acts of war and lived in the canabae in peacetime .
