Muljava appears as Mullau or Müllau in the early land records of the Parakeet Monastery . In Valvasor's description of the parakeet monastery, too, the name Mullau appears, albeit transformed into Mulara by the pressure devil.

Attractions

At the western end of the village is the house where the Slovenian writer and narrator Josip Jurčič (1840–1881) was born. It was built by his grandfather in 1826. The house has been preserved in its original form and is considered a valuable testimony to old Slovenian peasant architecture. A memorial plaque reminding Jurčič is attached to the house, which is set up as an ethnographic museum. In the valley behind the house, performances from Jurčič's works are presented annually in the open-air theater by the local theater association.

In the eastern part of the village there is a small Gothic church device Marije Vnebovzete (the Virgin of the Assumption) with a cemetery. Both are surrounded by a low circular wall. Josip Jurčič describes both in his story Jurij Kozjak - slovenski Janičar (Georg von Kosiack - the Slovenian Janitschtare ) based on an authentic event when in 1475 on April 25th, the day of St. Mark the Evangelist, a troop of Turkish horsemen unexpectedly appeared in Muljava and surprised the crowd gathered there for the procession .
