The Mullard 5-10 is a now famous mono hi - tube amplifier from the year 1954, the then British tube manufacturers Mullard Ltd . demonstrated the high performance potential of its Noval EF86 and EL84 generation of tubes . The designation 5-10 was derived from the number of tubes (5 tubes) and the maximum output power of the output stage of 10 watts .

The circuit design of the amplifier is based in principle on a development from 1947 by the English tube specialist DTN Williamson , who was also involved in the construction of the KT66 beam tetrode : a pre-stage with an EF86 and a subsequent phase-reversing stage with an ECC83 controls two EL84 end pentodes , which use the push-pull principle to deliver power to the loudspeakers via the output transformer . A distortion factor of 0.4% at 10 W, which is low for a tube amplifier , is achieved with moderate negative feedback , and an EZ80 two-way tube diode is responsible for rectifying the anode voltage .
