Mullard

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mullard was a British manufacturer of electronic components . The original Mullard Radio Valve Co. Ltd. was founded in 1920 by Stanley R. Mullard . In 1923 Mullard entered into a partnership with the Dutch electronics company Philips , which took over all shares in Mullard in 1927.

history

Captain Stanley R. Mullard had initially developed electron tubes for the Admiralty and then became Managing Director of Z Electric Lamp Co. In 1920 he founded Mullard Radio Valve Co. Ltd. in London . After the BBC was founded in 1922, the need for radio tubes increased in Great Britain. To operate this, Mullard entered into a partnership with Philips in 1923, who had already launched their first radio tube in 1918. In 1927, Philips took over Mullard completely. In 1928 Mullard launched the first pentode based on Philips patents on the British market.

Mullard u. a. in Mitcham (1929) and Blackburn (late 1930s). Mullard later made semiconductors in Southampton and Stockport near Manchester . The first products were germanium - transistors (OC50, OC51, top transistors , later OC70 and OC80 in the glass case), then integrated circuits .

At the end of the 1980s, Philips combined the semiconductor activities in the Philips Semiconductors division (today NXP Semiconductors ), the (formerly regional) brands such as Valvo , Signetics and Mullard were no longer used.

The IC factory in Southampton was closed in 2011 and the NXP factory in Manchester is now producing power semiconductors.

Brand name

The Mullard brand continues to be used by the American company New Sensor Corporation ( Sovtek , Electro-Harmonix ). Variants of the ECC83 and EL34 electron tubes are available under the Mullard name. The primary areas of application are tube amplifiers such as guitar amplifiers .
