MultiMode gear

Multimode transmission (English: Multi Mode Transmission, MMT) refers to an automated manual transmission at Toyota . With this technology, a 5- or 6-speed manual transmission is combined with a fully automatic clutch unit in which one electric motor operates the clutch and two others operate the gearshift. There is no clutch pedal. The gear lever is reminiscent of an automatic selector lever. You can drive with this gearbox like a conventional manual gearbox (manual, M), whereby the gears are changed via the gear lever (on the Toyota Auris and Yaris gear changes are also possible via the paddles on the steering wheel). An automatic mode (E) and a sport mode (Es) are also available. Here the vehicle automatically selects the gears and driving behavior is similar to that of the automatic. Since an automated manual transmission, unlike a conventional automatic transmission or a dual clutch transmission, cannot be power shifted, there is an interruption in tractive power when changing gear.

Automated manual transmissions achieve lower fuel consumption in the standardized driving cycle than manual transmissions because they upshift earlier than the simulated driver in the driving cycle. Conventional automatic transmissions with hydraulic torque converters have even higher consumption values because of their poor efficiency.

The transmission is designed in E-mode to save fuel as much as possible; it happens that upshifts are made at an engine speed of 2000 revolutions per minute. In Es mode, the gear change can be influenced by slightly releasing the accelerator pedal, i.e. practically shifting with the foot. With older software versions of the MMT control unit, especially in city traffic, it sometimes happened that switching back and forth was frequent at speeds between 30 and 50 km / h. Some drivers were also bothered by the fact that when driving slowly, for example when turning in residential areas without changing the speed, first gear was suddenly engaged, which could lead to unpleasant hopping effects.

The multimode transmission is currently only available for the Aygo . The gearbox was also available for Corolla , Corolla Verso , Yaris and Auris .

Instead of the MultiMode transmission, Toyota uses a continuously variable transmission called Multidrive-S in the models from small cars upwards .
