The Toyota Aygo is a miniature car from Toyota, mainly designed for the European market, with four seats and either two or four doors. The Aygo is manufactured together with the largely identical Citroën C1 and Peugeot 107/108 at the Toyota Peugeot Citroën Automobile (TPCA) plant in Kolín (Czech Republic). This is why none of the hybrid variants common at Toyota are available.

Since the first model generation went on sale in July 2005, it has been Toyota's smallest passenger car model, although the Toyota iQ produced from 2008 to 2014 was even shorter, but otherwise positioned above the Aygo. The Aygo aims at a rather young target group, the name Aygo is supposed to mean I go ( English: 'I go / drive'). The Aygo could - together with its two sister models PSA Group - the VCD - Environment Ranking 2005-2008 place as the best non-hybrid vehicle.

Measures to reduce costs

The Aygo is built together with the largely identical Citroën C1 and the Peugeot 107 at the Toyota Peugeot Citroën Automobile (TPCA) plant in Kolín ( Czech Republic ). All three models have the same three-cylinder gasoline engine with camshaft adjustment (VVT-i), one liter displacement and 50  kW (68  hp ) as in the Daihatsu Sirion . For reasons of cost, unlike most other vehicles, the driver and front passenger seats are the same; the seat covers are only glued to the upholstery. The rear windows of the five-door are vent windows, which saves window guidance and lifting mechanism. The special equipment available from the factory only comprises five items, which simplifies the production process and storage.

Toyota attached great importance to safety in the design. In the Euro NCAP crash test, the car received four stars (26 points) for occupant safety and three stars (36 points) for child safety . Pedestrian safety was also a high priority during development. At the end of 2012, the Toyota Aygo only got three stars in the NCAP crash test. The reason for this was the partly outdated safety equipment, which was not improved until July 2013.

The vehicle is optionally available with a five-speed manual gearbox or with the automatic five-speed MultiMode transmission .

The Aygo has electric power steering and a turning circle of 9.46 m. It is only suitable for trailer operation to a limited extent: After approval by an expert, a trailer load of 500 kg can be braked or 350 kg unbraked. The tank holds 35 liters.

Model history

In September 2004 the first photos of the Erlkönig appeared. On March 1, 2005, the Aygo came on the market as a three- and five-door model. At the same time, series production began at TPCA in Kolín (Czech Republic). The basic price for the small car was 8950 euros (as of April 2005).

In May, the result of the Euro NCAP crash test for the structurally identical Citroën C1 was presented: four stars (out of five possible). In August of the same year, the Aygo was given a sporty look with the TTE logo. The Aygo with diesel engine was presented at the IAA in Frankfurt in September 2005. In January 2006, an automatic transmission was offered for an additional charge of 580 euros, which can also be shifted manually using the tip function.

In June 2006 Toyota presented a ready-to-drive study with 200 HP (147 kW) at the British Motor Show in London.

In August 2006 the Aygo took third place on the environmental list of the Verkehrsclub Deutschland of the most economical, cleanest and quietest cars. From March 2007, the vehicle dynamics control (ESP) was standard in the "Club" equipment level . In the equipment variants "Aygo", "City" and for all special models, the ESP was offered for 445 euros extra.

Facelift

2009

At the end of 2008 the Aygo underwent a minor facelift . These cars were available from January 24, 2009.

The air inlets in the bow were redesigned and a new sideline was introduced. In addition, the rear lights were provided with chrome rings and the B-pillars of the five-door variant were painted black. Consumption was further reduced by using the “Toyota Optimal Drive” concept, so that the car now emits 106 instead of 109 g / km of CO ₂ . This was achieved through the use of a friction-reducing engine oil and an overrun fuel cut-off that also works when changing gears.

2012

Another revision took place in spring 2012. The engine was improved. With the same output, it now consumes 4.4 l / 100 km and emits just 102 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer driven. The car also received LED daytime running lights and a new front apron.

Model variants

The originally planned 40 kW 1.4-liter diesel engine (four-cylinder from PSA Peugeot Citroën ) was not introduced on the German market. However, the diesel version was available in Switzerland or as an EU import from Belgium, Denmark and France. In the meantime, the production of the diesel has been stopped. The second generation of the Aygo was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2014. As with the previous model, it is identical to the smallest Citroen, the C1 , and the smallest Peugeot, the Peugeot 108 . According to chief engineer Terai, the design of this generation of Aygo is inspired by Japanese youth culture.

All models came on the market in summer 2014. Furthermore, a one-liter gasoline engine serves as the only drive source; it has been improved on a number of points.

In March 2018, Toyota presented a revised version of the Aygo at the Geneva Motor Show, which was available from dealers from June 16, 2018.

Equipment variants

The Aygo is available in three equipment versions (x, x-play, x-wave) and three special versions (x-cite, x-clusiv, x-play touch), depending on the model, it is sometimes sportier, sometimes more luxurious. As an x-wave, it also offers an electric folding roof. LED daytime running lights, stability control and Hill Start Assist are included as standard in the basic equipment. Numerous on-board functions can be controlled via the optional seven-inch touchscreen in the center console. Since June 2018, Apple CarPlay TM and Android Auto have been available for the integration of a smartphone as an option and in conjunction with the touchscreen .

The dashboard can be personalized with interchangeable, different colored panels.

Technical specifications

The Aygo is offered with a 1.0-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine with either a five-speed manual gearbox or the automated 5-speed manual transmission "x-shift". The engine is friction and weight optimized; the friction could be reduced by 14% with several measures. Consumption is given as an average of 3.8–4.1 l super; the tank holds 35 liters.

From mid-June 2018, the engine got a new injection system and a revised compression rate.

The turning circle is 9.6 m. As with the predecessor, electric power steering is used. The chassis has MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam rear axle, as well as a stabilizer on both axles . The Aygo is only partially suitable for towing a trailer.

Registration numbers

Since the market launch in 2005 up to and including December 2019, 199,460 Toyota Aygo have been newly registered in the Federal Republic of Germany. 2009 was the most successful sales year with 29,520 units. This is due to the environmental bonus .
