Multiplexed Optical Data Storage

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Multiplexed Optical Data Storage (MODS or MODS-Disc) is an experimental storage medium that - similar to Compact Disc , DVD and Blu-ray Disc - is read and written by laser. The MODS was presented on September 27, 2004 at the Asia-Pacific Data Storage Conference in Taiwan by researchers from Imperial College London . The MODS could be ready for the market by 2015.

The storage capacity is 250 GB per layer. This is achieved using asymmetrical pits and lands (see CD ) that reflect the laser at 332 different angles. A MODS recorded on both sides, with two layers per side, would amount to one terabyte.
