Multnomah Falls is a large waterfall in Multnomah Creek on the Oregon-side Columbia River Gorge . The fall is in two stages (165 m and 21 m) and has a total height of 189 meters.
It is east of Troutdale between Corbett and Dodson on the Historic Columbia River Highway . The water comes from Larch Mountain.
It is often mistakenly claimed to be the second highest year-round flowing waterfall in the country. But there are at least 90 more waterfalls in the United States that have a higher total height.
The area can be reached via Interstate 84 east of Troutdale. West of the falls is the Benson State Recreation Area , named after Simon Benson.
A hiking trail leads to the Benson Arch Bridge, which sits well above the lower waterfall. The path continues to a platform at the upper step of the waterfall. The viewpoint located here gives a good overview of the Columbia River Gorge and the Little Multnomah (a smaller waterfall). The bridge was named after Simon Benson , a timber contractor and promoter of the construction of the Columbia River Highway who built the bridge in 1914.
The Multnomah Falls Lodge and Footpath , a lodge and a paved path (built in 1915) northeast of Bridal Veil has been a monument on the National Register of Historic Places since April 22, 1981 .
