Murat Kuzmich Dschiojew

Murat Kuzmich Dschiojew ( Russian Мурат Кузьмич Джиоев ; born October 1, 1955 in Busala near Jawa , South Ossetian Autonomous Region , Georgian SSR , Soviet Union ) is a South Ossetian politician and was Foreign Minister of the internationally unrecognized Republic of South Ossetia from 2002 to 2012 and 2016 to 2017 .

Murat Dschiojew studied at the Law Faculty of the South Ossetian State Pedagogical Institute until 1977 . He then completed postgraduate studies at the History Faculty of Moscow's Lomonosov University . In 1981 he defended his dissertation and obtained the academic degree of candidate . From 1981 to 1989 Dschiojew worked as a scientist in South Ossetia, mainly dealing with topics of Ossetian history and culture.

In 1990 he supported the withdrawal of South Ossetia from the Georgian state association. Until 1993 he was a member of the South Ossetian parliament. He then worked in various positions in the South Ossetian government. From 1999 to 2001 he was chairman of the South Ossetian electoral commission. During this time, the referendum on the introduction of Russian as the second official language (alongside Ossetian ) and the 2001 presidential elections took place.

Dschiojew was appointed foreign minister in the government in 2002 by the newly elected President Eduard Kokoity . He was followed by Dimitrij Medojew in 2017 .

He is currently the presidential agent for the resolution of post-conflict issues and takes part in the Geneva International Discussions in this capacity .
