The South Ossetian State University ( Ossetian Хуссар Ирыстоны паддзахадон университет ; Russian Юго-Осетинский государственный университетет ) is the largest university in South Ossetia . It was founded in 1932 with two faculties (physical-mathematical and agro-biological) as the South Ossetian Pedagogical Institute. In the academic year 1937–38 the number of students was 138, in the next year 255, in the academic year 1977–78 2000. Today around 3000 students are enrolled in the twelve faculties of the university.
Previous names were: Staliniris Agrobiological Institute and South Ossetian Pedagogical Institute . In 1993 it was renamed the South Ossetian State University , named after the Ossetian writer Alexander Tibilow .
