Murphy’s is an Irish brewery in Cork .

history

The brewery was founded in 1856 by James Jeremiah Murphy and his brothers in Cork. It has since been located in a huge former hospital building, near a spring called Lady's Well , which is dedicated to the Mother of God and is said to have miraculous healing powers. With this in mind, Murphy's Brewery is also known as the Lady's Well Brewery. Initially, only the Porter , popular in Ireland at the time, was brewed, later also the creamy, mild Murphy's Irish Stout , which is still a trademark of Cork and is exported to this day. It is similar to the other two Irish stouts, Guinness and Beamish . A license agreement was signed in 1975 and Murphy's has been brewing Heineken for the Irish market ever since . Murphy's Brewery has been owned by Heineken International since 1983 and now operates mainly under that name.

There was also a still of the same name in Cork (Murphy's blended whiskey brand was later made by Irish Distillers in Midleton).
