Murrisk
Murrisk ( Irish : Muraisc ) is a place with about 200 inhabitants in County Mayo , Ireland , south of Clew Bay . It is about 6 km west of Westport and 2 km east of Lecanvey . The place lies at the foot of the most famous pilgrimage mountain in Ireland, the Croagh Patrick . Every year, on the last Sunday in July, around 25,000 pilgrims start their hike up the mountain from there.
Attractions
- The Great Famine Memorial in Ireland , the National Famine Memorial , was designed by John Behan . The Dublin artist (* 1938) created a ship in the form of a coffin in which dying people lie. The memorial was inaugurated in 1997 by Irish President Mary Robinson .
- The ruins of the Murrisk Abbay on the lake side of the place are an Irish national monument and were an Augustinian abbey founded in 1457 by the O'Malley family.

Both the Roman Catholic and the Church of Ireland denominations are represented in Murrisk . In both churches the place belongs to the Oughaval parish .
