The museum is located in the so-called Pavilion Anne de Beaujeu , named after Anne de Beaujeu , built between 1497 and 1503 next to the castle, which is now almost completely destroyed, a two-storey structure interrupted by mansards on the upper floor with arcades on the ground floor, which is one of the first examples of the Renaissance architecture is seen in France. Returning to Italy from a campaign, King Charles VIII brought with him Italian artists who no doubt influenced the building's architecture and decoration. In front of the pavilion there is a French garden with some exotic plants.

The permanent exhibition focuses on prehistory and early history, genealogies, faience from Moulins , medieval stone sculptures, and religious painting from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. In addition, special exhibitions are organized.
