Museum of Photography in Mont-sur-Marchienne

The Museum of Photography ( Musée de la Photographie de la Communauté française à Charleroi ) in Mont-sur-Marchienne near Charleroi in Wallonia ( Belgium ) opened in 1987. It is located in a former Carmelite monastery .

The extensive collection on the history of photography documents practically all phases of the development of photography with original prints. It contains early daguerreotypes as well as examples from the Düsseldorf School of Photography (e.g. Andreas Gursky , Thomas Struth , Thomas Ruff ). In addition, the museum shows a small collection of cameras from different eras and regularly presents changing exhibitions on contemporary photography. In total, the collection comprises over 80,000 photographs, of which around 800 are on display, as well as two million negatives.

Since its expansion by 1200 m² in 2008 with a new building by the architects ESCAUT Architecture and the Bureau d'Etudes Weinand, the Museum of Photography has 6000 m² of exhibition space. The museum's specialist library has around 13,000 works.
