Maison Hazeur (right) and Maison Smith (left)

The museum is housed in the Maison Hazeur and the adjacent Maison Smith . The former was built in 1684 as a residence for the wealthy merchant François Hazeur and was considered the most beautiful in town at the time. Before that, the forge of the Habitation de Québec built by Samuel de Champlain stood there . The Maison Smith dates from the early 19th century. The Maison Hazeur was badly damaged by fire in April 1990, only the vaulted cellar and the facade remained. As a result, it was completely rebuilt together with the Maison Smith behind the façades and adapted to the new use. The museum opened in 1999.

Essentially, the museum deals with the history of the Place Royale and the people who live there, starting with city founder Samuel de Champlain.
