The Musée de la place Royale is a museum in the Canadian city of Québec . It is located on Place Royale , the central square of the lower town . The museum, which is part of the Les Musées de la civilization association , deals with the history of the oldest district of Québec, which dates back to the early 17th century.
The museum is housed in the Maison Hazeur and the adjacent Maison Smith . The former was built in 1684 as a residence for the wealthy merchant François Hazeur and was considered the most beautiful in town at the time. Before that, the forge of the Habitation de Québec built by Samuel de Champlain stood there . The Maison Smith dates from the early 19th century. The Maison Hazeur was badly damaged by fire in April 1990, only the vaulted cellar and the facade remained. As a result, it was completely rebuilt together with the Maison Smith behind the façades and adapted to the new use. The museum opened in 1999.
Essentially, the museum deals with the history of the Place Royale and the people who live there, starting with city founder Samuel de Champlain. It explains the development of the square and its economic activities over the course of three centuries. There are also prehistoric artifacts of the indigenous people who lived in the Place Royale area before the French arrived.
