The Musée du Petit Palais ( German Museum in the Small Palace ) is a museum and art gallery in Avignon , France.
history
The museum, located about 200 m from the Papal Palace and the Pont d'Avignon , opened in 1976. The present museum building dates back to the 14th century and was formerly the official residence of the Archbishop of Avignon and is called the "Small Palace" ( French Petit Palais ) to distinguish it from the Palace of the Popes .
collection
The holdings come from the Musée Calvet in Avignon and the Louvre in Paris.
The museum shows, among other things, a collection of works by the Avignon School , art at the court of the Popes when they resided there from 1309 to 1376, and paintings from the Italian Renaissance , some of which come from the extensive collection of Giampietro Campana which the French state acquired in part in 1861.
