Musée et Chiens du Saint-Bernard

The Barryland - Musée et Chiens du Saint-Bernard is a museum in Martigny in the canton of Valais that is dedicated to the history and breeding of the Saint Bernard dogs.

history

In 2004 the Order of Canons of the Great St. Bernhard announced that, due to insufficient membership, he was no longer able to take care of the St. Bernard breeding in his hospice . This would have meant the end of the breeding line “from the Great St. Bernard”. Thereupon the foundation "Barry du Grand-Saint-Bernard" became active and took over the breeding and maintenance of the kennel du Grand St. Bernard (from the Great St. Bernard). Thanks to another donation of Mr. and Mrs. de Watteville also was in the former armory a St. Bernard Museum be established from Martigny.

The museum

On the first floor, the museum shows exhibits on the ancient Canterbury - Rome pilgrimage route , which led through the Aosta Valley and made it necessary to cross the pass. Saint Bernard dogs have been kept at the hospice since around the 17th century and helped the canons track down missing pilgrims who had not arrived at their destination due to avalanches or bad weather. This work of the canons and their dogs is shown in the museum u. a. illustrated by a film.

From the 19th century onwards, numerous legends grew up around the dogs of the Great St. Bernhard. Numerous exhibits in the museum document how they were presented in literature, art and advertising.

On the second floor you can see changing exhibitions on various topics.

Dog breeding

The ground floor including the outdoor enclosure is reserved for dog breeding and keeping.
