Musculus is a mussel genus of the family of mussels ( Mytilidae ); it is the type genus of the subfamily Musculinae .

features

The comparatively small housings are more or less transversely ovoid in outline. The vertebra sits near the front end. Front and rear ends are radially ribbed with a smooth central section. The dorsal section in the rear part is separated from the rest of the housing by a few diagonal furrows. The inner edges of the lock are covered with nodules. The anterior sphincter starts well in front of the vertebrae. The outflow siphon is elongated and therefore as long as the inflow siphon. The shell is relatively thin.

Geographical distribution and way of life

The genus Musculus is common worldwide; a focus of diversity is in the northern seas. The species of the genus live in shallow water with byssus attached to stones and algae.

Taxonomy and systematics
