The auricularis posterior muscle ("rear ear muscle") is a small skin muscle of the head and part of the auricle muscles . It arises from the mastoid part of the temporal bone and attaches to the base of the auricle . In humans, it consists of two delicate strands that cover the retroauricular lymph nodes .
In animals in which the ears are significantly more mobile and play a greater role in facial expressions and social behavior ("ear play"), several rear ear muscles are developed. In detail these are:
- Musculus cervicoscutularis (neck-shield-muscle)
- Musculus cervicooauricularis superficialis (superficial throat and ear muscle)
- Musculus cervicooauricularis medius (middle throat and ear muscle)
- Musculus cervicooauricularis profundus (deep throat-ear muscle)
