Samuel Davis Dalembert (born May 10, 1981 in Port-au-Prince , Haiti ) is a former Canadian - Haitian basketball player who was active in the North American professional league NBA from 2001 to 2015 . During his playing days, the 2.11 meter center was best known as a good rebounder and shot blocker .

In 2010 Dalembert received the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award for exemplary social commitment. He received the award for his humanitarian work for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti .

Career

Youth and college

Dalembert was born in Haiti and grew up in Port-au-Prince . At the age of 14, his family moved to Montreal, Canada . There he began to be interested in basketball and started playing himself. After two years at Seton Hall University , he signed up for the 2001 NBA Draft and was selected 26th by the Philadelphia 76ers .

NBA

As a rookie in the 2001/02 season , the center was only a bench player and came to only 34 games and 1.5 points and 2.0 rebounds in 5.2 minutes per game. A knee operation forced Dalembert to suspend the entire 2002/03 season . The 2004/05 season was more successful, because he completed all 82 games of his team and recorded a solid 8.0 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game.

In the following two seasons there was no improvement in Dalembert's game and criticism was raised, which Dalembert described as overpaid and lazy and denied him a professional attitude to the sport of basketball. But in the 2006/07 season , Dalembert started all 82 league games and achieved personal bests in the categories point average (10.7), rebounds per game (8.9), free throw rate (74.6%), field throw rate (54.1%) and minutes per game (30.9). He also started all 82 games in the 2007/08 and 2008/09 seasons . On average, he achieved 10.5 points and 10.4 rebounds in 2007/08. In 2008/09 he got a little less playing time and reached 6.4 points and 8.5 rebounds.

For the 2010/11 season he was transferred to the Sacramento Kings by the 76ers in exchange for Spencer Hawes and Andrés Nocioni . He did not sign a new contract with the Kings for the 2011/12 season and thus became a free agent .

Shortly before the start of the 2011/12 season , Dalembert was signed by the Houston Rockets . After only one season there, he was given up by Houston to the Milwaukee Bucks . At the Bucks, however, Dalembert could not prevail as hoped, as he was repeatedly forced to take breaks due to injuries.

For the 2013/14 season , Dalembert moved to the Dallas Mavericks , where he played 80 games in his only season with the Mavs.

After a year in Dallas, Dalembert was transferred from the Mavericks to the New York Knicks for the 2014/15 season , with three other players and draft picks . In return, center Tyson Chandler moved to Dallas.

From January 2015 Dalembert was without a club until July of the same year . He then returned to the Mavericks for a short time, but they waived him three days before the start of the season and terminated his contract.

Since 2015

In December 2015, Dalembert signed a contract with Shanxi Zhongyu in the Chinese CBA , where he played until the end of the 2016/17 season. Zhongyu was his last stop as a professional basketball player.

Canadian national team

Samuel Dalembert applied for Canadian citizenship in 2007 in order to fulfill his dream of participating in the Olympics with the national team . He finally became a Canadian citizen on August 27, 2007 and was soon accepted into the national team.

In July 2008, however, he was dismissed from the national team due to disciplinary misconduct.

Play style

Dalembert's game lived from his good athleticism, especially in his early days. His strengths included rebounding and blocking throws, made possible by excellent timing, strong jumping power and a wingspan of over 2.30 meters. In addition, despite his size, Dalembert was quick on his feet and very agile. His limited offensive abilities and his lack of constancy, as well as his lack of discipline more and more often towards the end of his career, were considered weaknesses.
