The quadratus plantae muscle ( Latin for "square sole muscle") is located in the area of the underside of the foot skeleton between the foot skeleton and the short toe flexor. It arises on the plantar surface of the heel bone ( calcaneus ). The quadratus plantae muscle attaches to the tendon of the long toe flexor ( flexor digitorum longus muscle ), just before it fans out into the partial tendons. It uses this tendon to attach to the bases of the end links of the second to fifth toes.

function

The quadratus plantae muscle changes the pulling direction of the tendons of the long toe flexor. Because of its effect on this tendon, the muscle is sometimes referred to as the plantar head of the long toe flexor and the flexor accesorius muscle .
