Retractor penis muscle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The retractor penis muscle ("retraction of the penis") is a strip-shaped paired muscle of the penis in mammals , which consists primarily of smooth muscles . It arises on the underside of the first caudal vertebra and attaches to the underside of the penis shaft. It is innervated by nerve fibers of the vegetative nervous system from the lumbar part of the spinal cord , which reach the muscle via the pudendal nerve . The retractor penis muscle pulls the penis back into the foreskin and stabilizes this curvature in animals with a sigmid-shaped curvature in the penile shaft (e.g. cloven-hoofed animals ). The muscle relaxes during erection .

The homologous muscle in female animals is the retractor clitoridis muscle .

A pudendal blockade can be used to relax the muscle so that the penis leans forward and is accessible for examination. The area of the insertion of the retractor penis muscle is the most common location for urinary stones in domestic cattle .
