The serratus posterior superior muscle ( Latin for "posterior upper saw tooth muscle" or "posterior upper saw tooth muscle") - referred to in animal anatomy as the serratus dorsalis cranialis muscle - is a skeletal muscle of the chest . It arises with a flat tendon ( aponeurosis ) on the neck ligament , on the spinous processes of the last cervical and first thoracic vertebrae and on the supraspinous ligament and starts in four prongs on the second to fifth rib .
The muscle lifts the corresponding ribs when it contracts, leading to an expansion of the rib cage and thus aiding inhalation. Like the serratus posterior inferior muscle, it is functionally part of the auxiliary inspiratory muscles .
