The stylohyoid muscle ( lat. For "stylus tongue muscle ") is a skeletal muscle of the head. It has its origin on the stylus process ( processus styloideus ) of the temporal bone and its insertion on the lateral edge of the hyoid bone . It is used to fix the hyoid bone and to lift it when swallowing . It is innervated by the ramus stylohyoid, a small branch of the facial nerve .
The stylohyoid muscle, together with the stylopharyngeus muscle, limits the lower jaw triangle ( Trigonum submandibulare ) to the rear. In addition, the muscle near its insertion fixes the tendon between the two muscle bellies of the digastric muscle on the hyoid bone.
