Museo Mandralisca

The Museo Mandralisca is a museum in Cefalù , Sicily . It is based on the private collection of Enrico Piraino, the Baron of Mandralisca, which he bequeathed to the city of Cefalù in the 19th century.

Due to its origin from a private collection, the Museo Mandralisca shows a colorful mixture of exhibits.

From ancient times there are ceramics from the Bronze Age to the 4th century BC. Among them is a crater from the 4th century BC. BC, who shows a satirical representation of a fishmonger in red-figure painting . A collection of coins from the Greek poleis of Sicily is also on display.

Several rooms show paintings by Flemish, Italian and Sicilian painters from the 15th to 18th centuries. The most important work in this collection is the painting "Portrait of a Stranger" by Antonello da Messina .

The museum also has a collection of clocks and other items from the 19th century, a mineral collection and a collection of shells.

Trivia

The Italian author Vincenzo Consolo describes in his novel The Smile of the Unknown Sailor the situation of the people of Sicily after the unification of Italy in the 1860s and the deeds of the baron, who suspected that the unknown was a conspirator against the old system.
