The Museo Militar de la Fuerza Armada de El Salvador is a military museum of the Armed Forces of El Salvador .

Location and collections

The museum is housed in the premises of the former Cuartel El Zapote barracks in San Salvador , a building from the 1920s. The museum's collection is exhibited in ten halls and an outdoor area. The museum also has a branch at the Ilopango military airfield , where airplanes, helicopters and other historical aviation equipment are on display.

The museum offers visitors historical weapons, vehicles, tanks, ships, coins, flags and photo series from military history on around 35,000 m². The affiliated library has documents (partly copies) on the deployment of the armed forces in the central provinces of El Salvador, as well as documents on the Chapultepec peace agreement .

The museum was founded in 1993. It has been at its current location since 2002. The operator is the Fuerza Armada de El Salvador .

Trivia

The collection also includes a popemobile that was used in 1983 when Pope John Paul II visited . The vehicle was designed in 1982 by Coronel Oswaldo Marenco Carballo and built by the Departamento de Industrias militares de Maestranza de la Fuerza Armada based on the chassis and drive of a Ford 700.
