location

The Museo de Antropología is located in a 40,000 m² park in the west of the 1450 m high city of Xalapa .

history

The museum has a long history going back to the 1930s; At the time it was called the Museo Antropológico de la Dirección General de Educación , but in 1951 it was renamed the Museo Veracruzano de Anthropología . In the 1960s it moved twice and in the 1980s the ethnological department was spun off. Today's unadorned building, designed by the American architect Edward Durell Stone, was built by the Mexican architect Sergio Mejia Ontiveros and inaugurated in 1986.

Exhibits

The most important exhibits are undoubtedly the 5 Colossal Olmec heads from the San Lorenzo Tenochtitlan site . But numerous other finds from the state of Veracruz also deserve attention.
