The Museo de Naturaleza y Arqueología ( Museum of Nature and Archeology ), until November 2018 Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre ( Museum of Nature and Man ) in Santa Cruz de Tenerife shows the geological, climatic and biological conditions in part of its permanent exhibitions of the Canary Islands. The other part deals with archaeological finds that primarily concern the history of the Canarian indigenous peoples.

The museum has been housed in the Antiguo Hospital Civil , a former hospital in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, since it opened in 2002 . The carrier is the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife in the form of the Museos de Tenerife corporation . In November 2018 the name Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre was abolished because y el Hombre refers more to anthropology and because Hombre can also be understood as a man , which does not correspond to the content of the exhibitions.

History of the museum

In June 1951 the Museo Insular de Ciencias naturales was founded in Santa Cruz de Tenerife . Its holdings consisted of various private collections of different origins. Its seat was in an old building on the spot where the Parque de la Granja was later created. In 1974 the holdings were moved to the Antiguo Hospital Civil. The Museo Arqueológico de Tenerife opened in 1958 with the collections of the Municipal Museum (Department of Archeology and Anthropology), the holdings of the Museum Villa Benítez and the Provincial Commissioner for Archaeological Excavations, the Gabinete Científico and smaller private collections. In this collection all archaeological materials and finds from the prehistory of Tenerife, expanded to include the results of the numerous new excavations, should be summarized. The Archaeological Museum was located in the premises of the Cabildo Insular building until it was also housed in the Antiguo Hospital Civil in 1994. In 1993, the Organismo Autónomo de Museos y Centros founded the Instituto Canario de Bioantropología for the purpose of scientific research in the fields of bioanthropology and human paleontology, forensic anthropology and genetics. At the end of the 1990s, the Museo Insular de Ciencias naturales , the Museo Arqueológico de Tenerife and the Instituto Canario de Bioantropología were combined in the Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre , which was opened on January 9, 2002 by the Spanish Queen Sofía in the Antiguo Hospital Civil opened.

Permanent exhibitions in the museum

The history of the development of the Canary Islands
Representation of the marine biology of the Canary Islands
The application of the archaeological finds is explained in film sequences.

In the eastern patio of the ground floor, the Patio Manuel de Oráa, there is a large chronological representation of the development of the Canary Islands and their flora and fauna. In the only permanent exhibition room behind it on the ground floor, the geological relationships that led to the formation of the islands are shown and an overview of the vegetation zones of the islands is given with diagrams and film projections.

On the two upper floors, the exhibition areas around the western patio, the Patio Las Palmeras, show the collections that deal with the biological development of the islands and the adjacent lake area. The exhibitions show different stages of development of the individual sub-areas: botany, terrestrial invertebrates, vertebrates, minerals, rocks and fossils as well as marine biology

On the exhibition areas around the eastern patio you can see the collections that show the development of the population of the Canary Islands before the conquest by the Europeans. The structure of the old collections of finds from the time of the Old Canary Islands was retained. They contain tools, implements, presumably cult objects and jewelry. The results of archaeological excavations on the island of Tenerife and other research are presented separately. An exhibition room deals with the petroglyphs in the Canary Islands. In an exhibition room, the different development of the ethnic groups of the individual Canary Islands is compared.

In the Department of Biological Anthropology, part of the holdings of the Instituto Canario de Bioantropología is presented together with more recent finds. Because of the better preservation possibilities of the museum, the mummies and mummy remains found on the island were brought together in the museum.

Use of the exhibitions

  • With the exception of a few public holidays, the museum is open to visitors every day.
  • The use of the exhibitions is also possible for people with disabilities.
  • Visiting the museum is free at certain times.
  • Free guided tours in different languages take place daily in the exhibitions.
  • The museum offers various events such as special tours and holiday workshops for children. For this purpose, there are rooms in the individual exhibition areas with teaching materials created by the museum staff, in which practical exercises can be carried out during visits by school classes that deepen what has been seen.

Museum activities

The Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre has been hosting the #NaturaJazz festival since 2014 . The Festival de Jazz y Fotografía de la Naturaleza (Festival of Jazz and Nature Photography) combines the photographic representation of nature, especially in the narrower geographical area of Tenerife and the Middle Atlantic, with jazz from bands from this area. At the main events in the museum, images of nature, primarily outstanding animal photos, are projected onto a large screen while listening to live music. In addition, there are introductory courses in nature photography and jazz for children on the premises of the museum. The introductory courses in nature photography for adults take place e.g. B. in the Anaga Landscape Park and in the Teno Landscape Park. Photo excursions are organized to particularly suitable places on the island. Well-known photographers of these subjects take part in public discussions about special areas of nature photography such as vertebrates of the Canary Islands or underwater photography.

As part of the task of the Museos de Tenerife , the staff of the museum organized international congresses, e.g. B. on the subject of mummies and participates in the exchange between different museums in Europe.

In close cooperation with the University of La Laguna , the museum's staff is regularly involved in archaeological excavations in the Canary Islands to ensure that the finds are recorded and secured. As part of the Museos de Tenerife , the museum is responsible for publishing the research results.

Even before the Organismo Autónomo de Museos y Centros de Tenerife was founded, the museum was the editor of magazines and books and issues teaching materials for schools.

In connection with these activities, temporary exhibitions take place in the museum, but also outside the museum.
