Since 2011, Museos de Tenerife has been the name of the Organismo Autónomo de Museos y Centros de Tenerife (OAMC; Spanish for Independent Association of Museums and Presentation Centers in Tenerife ), the central administration of all museums and presentation centers under the auspices of the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife. There are other museums on the island of Tenerife that are operated by other organizations or institutions.

institution

The OAMC was created in 1990 by the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife as an independent legal entity whose legal form roughly corresponds to that of a corporation under public law in Germany. Through this body, the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife takes on its tasks in the field of museum policy. The headquarters are in Santa Cruz de Tenerife , Calle Fuente Morales (in the building of the Antiguo Hospital Civil ). The aim is to research, record, protect and preserve the cultural heritage of the island of Tenerife and Macaronesia and other geographical areas of interest, as well as the dissemination and promotion of culture, science and education.

Creation of the Museos de Tenerife

The museums of Tenerife owe their existence to a number of learned people who created private historical collections in which they brought together various objects that probably came from before the conquest of the islands by Europeans. Since the beginning of the 19th century, these collections could be viewed by interested residents of Tenerife but also by foreign visitors to the island. The collections of Juan de Megliorini y Spínola with his famous mummy in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the Museo Casilda in Tacoronte and the Museo Villa Benítez in Santa Cruz de Tenerife were particularly well known . In 1877 the Cabinete Científico was founded as the central institution for the development of anthropology and archeology in the western Canary Islands.

The collections founded in the 19th century formed the basis on which the Cabildo de Tenerife created two museum institutions in the middle of the 20th century: the Museo Insular de Ciencias Naturales and the Museo Arqueológico . In June 1951, the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife gave its approval to the creation of the Museo Insular de Ciencias Naturales, whose holdings came from private collections of very different origins. The museum opened in early 1962 and was relocated to its current location in the Antiguo Hospital Civil in 1974. The Museo Arqueológico de Tenerife was opened in 1958 with holdings from the Museo Municipal (Sección de Arqueología y Antropología), the Provincial Commissioner for Archaeological Excavations, the Gabinete Científico and contributions from individuals. In order to develop and effectively develop its museum policy in a coordinated manner, the Cabildo de Tenerife founded the Organismo Autónomo de Museos y Centros de Tenerife as an independent body at the beginning of 1990 .

At the beginning of the 1990s, the Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre developed . In it, the Museo de Ciencias Naturales de Tenerife , the Museo Arqueológico de Tenerife and the Instituto Canario de Bioantropología were combined into one museum. In 1994 the holdings of the three institutions could be accommodated in the specially prepared building of the Antiguo Hospital Civil de Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Since November 2018, the museum has been called Museo de Naturaleza y Arqueología .

In May 1993 the Museo de la Ciencia y el Cosmos was opened, which aims to translate and convey the discoveries made through the study of the universe into a popular language. The natural and physical part of the museum is designed in such a way that visitors, especially children and young people, are introduced to the laws of physics through their own activities. The project was the result of an initiative together with the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC). To accommodate it, a new building was built in San Cristóbal de La Laguna that meets the requirements of the museum.

At the end of 1993 the Museo de Historia de Tenerife was opened in La Laguna with the aim of making the historical development of the island known to the public. In May 1995 the Museo de Antropología de Tenerife was founded, which among other things is supposed to research, preserve and spread folk culture . Both museum projects finally came together in a single museum with two locations: Casa Lercaro is a 16th century building in La Laguna and Casa del Carta is an estate in Valle Guerra.

The last institution to become part of the Museos de Tenerife is the Centro de Documentación Canarias y América (CEDOCAM). The core items are a library and a digital media library as well as a collection of documents relating to the Canary Islands and their relations with America. CEDOCAM started work in April 2007 in a mansion in La Laguna on Calle Anchieta in close proximity to Casa Lercaro.

At the end of 2011, the name of the institution was changed from Organismo Autónomo de Museos y Centros to Museos de Tenerife , along with a changed corporate identity, which should represent a new strategic concept for the museums of Cabildos de Tenerife.
