Shimshon Amitsur

Shimshon Avraham Amitsur ( Hebrew שמשון אברהם עמיצור; * as Shimshon Kaplan on August 26, 1921 in Jerusalem ; † September 5, 1994 in Jerusalem) was an Israeli mathematician who studied algebra .

Amitsur grew up in Tel Aviv and began studying with Jakob Levitzki at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem before World War II . During World War II, he volunteered in the British Army in the Jewish Brigade and soon after fought for the independence of the State of Israel , while simultaneously earning his diploma in 1945 and his PhD in 1948. Around 1948 he changed his name from Kaplan to Amitsur. He became a professor at the Hebrew University and was the leading algebraic scientist in Israel after the death of his teacher Levitzki. In 1989 he retired. He was also involved in reforming math teaching in schools in Israel.

He dealt with ring theory and the theory of division algebras . In 1950 he and his teacher Levitzki proved a theorem about matrix rings with polynomial identity (PI rings). In 1972, in the theory of division algebras, he answered a question from Abraham Adrian Albert (1931), whether every central finite-dimensional division algebra is a cross product, negatively, by constructing a counterexample from the theory of PI algebras.

Amitsur was the co-founder and editor of the Israel Journal of Mathematics . In 1953 he received the Israel Prize for Exact Sciences . In 1990 he received an honorary doctorate from Ben Gurion University . He was a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences . In 1970 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Nice ( Some results on rings with polynomial identities ) and in 1962 in Stockholm ( Rational identities and foundation of geometry ).

His PhD students include Avinoam Mann, Amitai Regev, Eliyahu Rips, and Aner Shalev.
