The Museo del Mare di Napoli (Italian, Eng. "Sea Museum Naples") is a publicly accessible museum that is affiliated with the technical college Istituto Nautico in Naples . It serves as a museum reception of the maritime history of the Campania region and in particular of the city of Naples. The ship models that were adopted as teaching objects from the Istituto Nautico and its predecessors are particularly valuable .

The museum

It was founded in 1992 in Bagnoli , a suburb of Naples. Since 1997 it has been a member of the Assoziazione dei Musei del Mare del Mediteraneo and since 2007 it has belonged to the Musei diinterest regional dalla Regione Campania (Italian, German about "Museums related to the Campania region"). It is also a member of international museum associations, e.g. B. European Maritime Museums . Over 2000 mostly technical objects from the last three centuries are presented in various rooms. In addition to the ship models, marine radio systems form a focus of the collection. A library is also part of the museum.
The museum sees the focus of its work in promoting the idea of a culture of remembrance, especially in this region. That is why there is an intensive collaboration with other small and private collections and museums up to the Sorrento region. The design of the homepage is also subject to this goal.

The collection

When the museum was founded, it took over the teaching materials from the Nautical Institute. The objects have been collected since the 18th century and represent the development of the Neapolitan Navy up to the Italian unification and civil shipping from the region and the Gulf of Naples . All ship models were built and used as demonstration and teaching models. They show tall ships, ships of the Neapolitan navy and large and small regional ship types. A special feature is a large model of a passenger ship from the beginning of the 20th century in an original showcase. Tools and material samples for shipbuilding have been preserved from teaching operations as demonstration objects. The objects from the 20th century are mostly radio technology devices. A complete radio station that can be operated by visitors is set up in imitation on-board operation. Other exhibits include nautical instruments starting from the 18th century and nautical items. The collection that originally emerged from the institute is being expanded through donations and acquisitions of collections and objects from private individuals and companies. They want the disappearing maritime culture of remembrance from the Gulf of Naples to be preserved.
