The Museu de Marinha (German: Marinemuseum ) is a museum in the Belém district in Lisbon ( Portugal ).

It is located in a part of the west wing of the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (German: Hieronymitenkloster ), together with the Museu Nacional de Arqueologia and in a modern extension to the north of the monastery. The museum is managed by the Portuguese Navy .

The museum exhibits historical paintings, navigational instruments and many models of ships that have been used in Portugal since the 15th century. It is one of the most visited museums in Portugal.

history

The history of the museum is closely linked to King Luís I (1838–1889), a lover of oceanographic studies , who was himself a navigator and was the only king of Portugal to ever command a ship. He established a collection of items related to the maritime history of Portugal in 1863. In 1916, the majority of the ship models were destroyed in a fire in the Sala do Risco .

In 1947 Jaime do Inso took over the management of the museum. He integrated the collection of ship models that the private citizen Henrique Monfroy de Seixas had built up and bequeathed to the museum after his death at the end of 1947. The condition was that the entire collection, which filled nine rooms in his home, was transferred to the museum within three months. After approval by the Ministry of Finance, the collection was temporarily housed in the palace of the Conde de Farrobo .

At the beginning of the 1950s, the museum was part of the naval school on Rua do Arsenal and the local naval library. Large parts were also housed in the Sala do Risco and in the Palácio das Laranjeiras . In 1956, Inso began planning to bring the collection under one roof, although he had already been retired in 1950. In 1959, Inso received the title of museum director. Finally, the Museu de Marinha was officially opened in its current premises in August 1962.
