Museu del Mar (Lloret de Mar)
The Museu del Mar ( Sea Museum ) is a museum in Lloret de Mar .
The building
The decree of Carlos III. on free trade with the American colonies from 1778 resulted in a wave of emigration from Spain to the New World. Some of the emigrants were successful and returned home as rich people, where they expressed their new wealth in representative buildings. One of these "americanos" was Enric Baptista Garriga who had the Can Garriga mansion built in a prime location in Lloret, where the museum is today. The building permit for the house was granted in 1886 and the house was completed in 1887. Enric Garriga died in 1889 shortly after the building was completed. His widow, Mercedes Garriga Bitlloch, bought the neighboring house for 12,500 pesetas and expanded the house in 1915 to its present form. Her son, Salvador Garriga i Garriga (1881–1955), lived in the house he had inherited until his death. In 1982 the building was purchased by the city of Lloret de Mar for 90 million pesetas. She used it as a Verdaguer cultural center and today as a marine museum.
The house is located on Passeig de Cinto Verdaguer, the city's seafront promenade. In the middle of the bay of Lloret, the Passeig de Cinto Verdaguer forms a palm-lined square, the ends of which are formed by the town hall on the one hand and Can Garriga on the other.
The building is a listed building .
The museum
Opened in 1981, the museum shows ship models, video installation on the history of the house, the family and the maritime trade from Lloret, pictures and interiors from the late 19th century.
