The museum shows works of art from the property of the married couple Meda Mládková and Jan Mládek, in particular the extensive collections of the painter František Kupka and the sculptor Otto Gutfreund .

Meda Mládková began collecting paintings by Kupka in the USA in the 1950s. She bought works by Czechoslovak, Polish, Hungarian and Yugoslav artists to exhibit in the West. The collection moved from Washington to the newly opened museum. In 2002, Jiří Kolář and Běla Kolářová donated their art collection to the museum.

building

The name of the former Sova mills ( Sovovy mlýny ) goes back to Václav Sova, who set up craft workshops with mills on the island of Kampa in the 15th century. In the 19th century, the mill was rebuilt several times with the participation of well-known architects such as Joseph Kranner , Josef Schulz and Josef Zítek . In 1896 the building burned down and the steam mill was stopped.

The building has been owned by the city since 1920. It was used by various cultural institutions, including the Academy of Sciences . In 2000 the dilapidated building was completely renovated and opened as a museum in 2003.
