The Museum Regiunal Surselva ( German : Regional Museum Bündner Oberland ) is an ethnographic museum in Ilanz .

museum

The bilingual German- Rhaeto-Romanic museum is housed in the Casa Carniec , an old patrician house in the old town. It shows exhibits from more than 60 Surselva villages on four floors . The museum takes into account the ethnic groups of both the Rhaeto-Romanic as well as the German-speaking, with the latter especially the Walser (in the Surselva they settle in the Safien Valley and Obersaxen ). The museum is supported by the “Museum Regiunal Surselva” foundation and has existed since 1988.

House

The 'Casa Carniec' was the oldest residence of the Schmid von Grüneck family from Ilanz. The vaults in the basement and ground floor date from the High Middle Ages . The former ballroom is decorated with wall paintings from the mid-16th century. The pictures were painted "al secco" on the dry plaster. The motifs are embedded in flowers, vines and oak tendrils. The illustrated ribbons that originally ran around the room were partially destroyed by structural interventions. 1996–1998 the pictures were restored.

In 1980 Casa Carniec was acquired by the “Museum Regiunal Surselva” foundation that had been established a year earlier.
