Museum am Markt, seen from the market square
Representation of the life of the working class in the 20th century

The permanent exhibition, which was completely modernized in 2011, deals in ten themed rooms with sagas and stories from the city's past in the central Black Forest. A radio play tells the story of the devil and the maid who were blamed for a big fire in 1533. A hands-on model documents the structure and stability of half-timbered walls, as numerous historical half-timbered buildings shape the cityscape in Schiltach. It also tells the story of the rural community Lehengericht, which has been incorporated into Schiltach since 1974. Due to its scattered settlement across different valleys, the Lehengericht town hall was therefore outside its own territory on Schiltach - a special feature throughout Germany. The past is not the only thing that is remembered, the tradition of fiefdom costume, which has been cultivated to the present, is also shown. In other areas, the industrialization of today's industrial location, characterized by the natural raw material and energy sources wood and water, is presented. A model also vividly presents the history of the Roman road from Strasbourg to Rottweil along the Kinzig valley, which has been shaping up to the present day. Exhibition visitors have access to modern ipads, which offer in-depth content in German, English and French.
