Exhibition in the tower archive, 1976

After a special exhibition on the history of Preungesheim in 1972 on the occasion of the 1200th anniversary of Preungesheim in the parish hall, a small exhibition was set up in the basement of the church tower in the mid-1970s, which were removed and stored in storage during the renovations in the Kreuzkirche in the 1990s. This collection has formed the basis of the district museum since it opened in 2015. The collections have been systematically supplemented and expanded in recent years.

Preungesheim in the Middle Ages

Parts of a medieval tiled floor from the Preungesheimer Kreuzkirche

The history of Preungesheim in the Middle Ages is presented: Preungesheim was already an important settlement in the Middle Ages; With the Frankfurt Cathedral, one of the oldest sacred buildings in the region can be found in the Preungesheim church. The oldest known construction phase was already in Merovingian times. The first written mention of Preungesheim comes from 772. The results of the archaeological investigations are presented and explained with the presentation of the excavation findings from the years 1998 to 2002 as well as the medieval building findings and the exhibition of some finds. Further subjects are the Knights of Preungesheim, the Counts of Hanau, the German Order and the medieval wall paintings in the Preungesheim Church.

Denomination and War

Over the centuries, the changing rulers in Preungesheim have repeatedly led to confessional disputes within the place (e.g. in the course of the various Reformations). Conflicts brought to the site such as the Thirty Years War and various armed conflicts in the 17th to 18th centuries directly affected the residents. At the end of the 18th century, numerous Preungesheimers had to fight in the American War of Independence (1775–1783). The individual fates of many Preungesheim residents behind this can be easily understood from the extensive sources in Preungesheim. The phases of the Reformation in Preungesheim and the relationship between the denominations are also dealt with. The Hanau Union of 1818 is a separate theme .

The exhibition looks at the life and work of the poet and theologian Johannes Carl , who was pastor in Preungesheim from 1861 until his death on January 25, 1887, with some personal objects from Carl's estate.

The Teutonic Order in Preungesheim

The role of the Teutonic Order in Preungesheim is presented in detail, as it was the formative force in Preungesheim from the 13th century to 1809.

He left behind buildings that shape the townscape, such as the baroque church or the old rectory from the 18th century. Relics from this time are exhibited, which illustrate the cultural achievements that the order brought to the place. Remains of the historical library, liturgical equipment from the 18th century and examples of home decor are shown as examples.

Hist. Photographs of the war destruction in Preungesheim

From the establishment of the Empire in 1871 to World War II

The development in Preungesheim from the establishment of the Empire in 1871 to the end of World War II is shown. The establishment of a military hospital in World War I and hundreds of field postcards illustrate the patriotic mood in the population in the late German Empire. The Third Reich is presented using the example of National Socialist propaganda. Numerous historical photos and documents show the destruction in World War II.

From the country to the city - everyday life in the 19th century

The development of the place from a village determined by agriculture to a district of Frankfurt is dealt with. In addition to the changes in economic life or the traffic routes, this mainly had social consequences. In addition, numerous objects of everyday culture are presented. The construction of the prison (1882–87) not only meant a change in the appearance of the town, but also new residents came to Preungesheim: civil servants, teachers and doctors. In addition to historical photos and documents about the prison, an original cell lock and other objects from the prison are shown. The club life in the 19th century is presented in detail with numerous objects. Here the museum u. a. has a valuable inventory of historical flags dating from the 1830s.
