Red Sandalwood Museum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Museum for Red Sandalwood (紫檀 博物館 / 紫檀 博物館zǐtánbówùguǎn ) is a museum in Beijing for historical furniture made of red sandalwood and at the same time a training center for the old tradition of sandalwood processing.

history

The museum was founded by Ms. Chen Lihua (陈丽华Chén Lìhuá / 陳麗華), Chief Executive Officer of FuWah International Group in Hong Kong , and opened on September 19, 1999, with an investment of 200 million yuan RMB . In 2003 it was classified in the highest level of attractiveness of the National Tourism Authority.

Red sandalwood ( Pterocarpus santalinus , known in Chinese as "zǐ tán" "紫檀 / 紫檀") was abundant in Southeast Asia. Due to the excessive use of wood since the mid-14th century during the Ming and Qing dynasties , the occurrence of old trees suitable for furniture production decreased. As a result, the manual skills for making furniture and other things from red sandalwood, which had developed in China over several centuries, threatened to disappear.

The efforts of the museum and its founder to revive ancient craftsmanship made it possible for the craftsmen in the Beijing Palace Museum to conduct extensive studies.

museum

Around 200 original pieces of furniture from the Ming and Qing dynasties are on display in the modern museum building, borrowed from the Chinese architecture of the last few centuries, as well as furniture that was created in the last three decades based on models from the two dynasties and models from well-known Beijingers Buildings exhibited. In addition, an insight into the processing of the red sandalwood is offered.
