Music Box Dancer is an instrumental composition by Frank Mills from 1974. It consists of a piano theme, which is accompanied by other instruments.

The piece was one of the greatest instrumental pop music hits between the middle and the end of the 20th century. To date, the sheet music alone has been sold three million times. Unlike many other instrumental titles from the late 1970s that became popular pop hits at the time, Music Box Dancer is not disco- oriented.

Music Box Dancer was written and recorded by Frank Mills in 1974, but was not released as a single until 1978. Christmas 1978 the single reached the top ten of the pop music charts in Europe and Asia. In the US , the single was released in late 1978 and reached number 3 on the Hot 100 in April 1979 . The piece was also a hit in Europe, reaching the Top 20 in Germany and Austria and even numbering number 1 in Switzerland for five weeks .

Versions

To date, the song has been recorded in numerous different versions. Among them are well-known pianists such as Richard Clayderman , Floyd Cramer and Roger Williams . Orchestral versions, among others by James Last , were also produced. Roberto Delgado recorded a calypso version, while an accordion version was released in Sweden . The melody was also whistled and sung in Japanese . There is also a German-language version , sung by Marion Maerz with a text written by Peter Orloff .
