Pieta in Our Lady in Need

Our Lady in Need is a listed chapel in Werl in the Soest district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

The neo-Gothic chapel was built in 1901 under the direction of the cathedral master builder Wilhelm Sunder-Plaßmann in place of an older building made of Werler green sandstone . It was built richly structured over an elongated, octagonal floor plan. It is crowned with a roof turret. Inside, protected by bars, is the baroque Vespers picture , created around 1700, which is popularly referred to as Our Lady in Need . The group of figures is made of wood and was painted in color. Before the chapel was built, the Pietà was venerated in the wayside shrine in front of the former city wall by pilgrims moving into the city .

Above the outer doors Mary is depicted as the Queen of Heaven with the boy Jesus who hands over a rosary .
