A nut splitter is a tool for loosening nuts that can no longer be loosened by turning , for example due to severe corrosion . The nut splitter destroys the nut, but usually leaves the bolt thread on which it sits intact.

functionality

A nut splitter consists of a ring-shaped or bow-shaped frame that is placed around the nut to be split, and a movable pressure piece that then pushes a chisel-shaped cutting edge into the nut from the outside. The resulting notch weakens the wall thickness of the nut and at the same time expands its diameter, usually until it breaks, whereby the screw bolt is not or hardly touched by the pressure piece and remains undamaged.

The pressure piece can be driven mechanically via a fine thread or hydraulically . Some designs have a second, fixed cutting edge on the opposite side of the frame, which helps the nut to split open into two parts.

commitment

Compared to alternative methods such as the use of chisels , cut-off grinders or heat, nut splitters have an advantage if the destruction of the nut can be accepted, but damage to the screw thread should be avoided as far as possible. However, sufficient free space in the mother's environment is required.
