Muzeul Civilizației Popular Tradiționale "ASTRA" din Sibiu ( Museum of Traditional Folk Culture ASTRA ) is an open-air museum 3 km south of Sibiu (Hermannstadt) in Transylvania , Romania . The museum was originally founded as a museum for peasant technology and is now one of the largest open-air museums in Europe with an area of 96 hectares and over 400 transferred buildings.
history
The museum is part of the ASTRA museum complex in Sibiu with a total of four museums, several workshops, a documentation center, a large film archive and a large library. ASTRA stands for As ociația Tr ansilvană pentru Literatura Română și Cultura Poporului Român (Transylvanian Association for Romanian Literature and Folk Culture) based in Hermannstadt (Sibiu). While the other facilities are in the city center of Sibiu, the open-air museum is 3 km south of it.
The museum was founded in 1963 as a museum for peasant technology by the group around Cornel Irimie. From 1971 farmhouses and workshops were added, and from 1989 public infrastructure buildings such as a church, school, inn and bowling alley were added. In 1990 the museum changed its name to its current name.

The museum is located in the nature reserve Dumbrava Sibiului (in German roughly: Grove of Sibiu) in the Dumbrava forest area 3 km south of Sibiu in the northern Carpathian Mountains in a valley with watercourses, a natural lake and 10 km of footpaths. The museum can be easily reached by car, bus and tram.

The actual open-air museum takes up 42 hectares of the total area of 96 hectares. On the site there is an open-air exhibition of modern art on 3 hectares, two restaurants, a hostel, four parks, a playground, a folk art gallery, in which objects of art from different areas of the country can be bought, as well as plenty of space for demonstrations.
Unlike many open-air museums depicting one or more villages, the museum is divided into six thematic groups:
- Food production and pet ownership
- Raw material production
- Transport and traffic
- Manufacture of household appliances and tools
- Public buildings
- An art exhibition with large sculptures
A special feature are the different types of mills on the museum grounds . With the exception of tide mills, every known type of traditional energy generation is shown. Another attraction are the windmills from the different parts of the country. Skittles, an early form of bowling, can be played on its own pitch. Other attractions include a mine from the Apuseni Mountains , a wooden ferry, a fishery from the Danube Delta , two historical museum inns and a wooden church from Bezded in Sălaj County .
There is also a museum on the culture of the Roma , which is also intended to contribute to peaceful coexistence with this ethnic group.
Events and offers
Many special events take place within the museum complex: markets, festivals, craft workshops, etc. v. a. A floating stage is available for this.
There are lots of activities not just for children. There are workshops for adults to join in, handicraft presentations, team building, leisure activities etc.
