The Muzeum Niepodległości (German: Independence Museum ) in Warsaw was founded on January 30, 1990. The museum is located in the Przebendowski Palace at 62 Aleja Solidarności in downtown Warsaw .

The museum emerged from the Muzeum Historii Polskiego Ruchu Rewolucyjnego (German: Museum of the History of the Polish Revolutionary Movement ). At first it was named Muzeum Historii Polskich Ruchów Niepodległościowych i Społecznych (German: Museum of the History of the Polish Movement for Independence and Society ), in 1991 it was given its current name. The Przebendowski Palace was assigned as the seat of the museum by the Polish Ministry of Culture ( Ministerstwo Kultury i Sztuki ). In 1992 the museum received the status of a "National Cultural Institution" ( Narodowa Instytucja Kultury ).

The museum has three branches:

There are three permanent exhibitions in the Przebendowski Palace:

  • "Polonia Restituta". Independence and the borders from 1914 to 1921
  • "The white eagle ( Orzeł Biały , the Polish heraldic animal) over the centuries". The emblem and coat of arms of the Polish state in historical development
  • “So that Poland is Polish” ( Żeby Polska była Polską ). History of the Opposition in the People's Republic (1945 to 1989)

From 1990 to 2007 around 200 special exhibitions were organized, which were visited by more than 7 million people. Since 1994 the museum management has published the history publication “Niepodległość i Pamięć” ( Independence and Remembrance ).
